Vacuum degassing for digested sludge: EloVac® demonstration plant contributes to achieving carbon neutrality in Wales in 2030

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water piloting EloVac® at Five Fords, Wales to evaluate the improvements of dewatering and the reduction of methane gas emissions of digested sludge

By installing an EloVac® demonstration unit at Five Fords, Wrexham in Wales/Great Britain, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is taking the next step towards achieving Net Zero 2030. With EloVac®, methane gas emission will continuously be extracted from the sludge, hence increasing the biogas yield and in addition reducing the carbon footprint of the sewage plant. For a sewage treatment plant at the size of Five Fords, the Carbon Dioxide equivalent will be reduced of up to 3,200 car kilometres a day. Welsh Water and ELIQUO are testing a new configuration of ELIQUO’s vacuum degassing technology for evaluating the potential of both, a higher performance and capacity of the digester. David Holthofer, Head of Bioresources at Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, says: "This is the first time EloVac® has so far been trialled in the UK. Our efforts underline our serious intent to become a world class, resilient and sustainable water service for the benefit of future generations.”
